Teachers' Liability Insurance

I am often asked why New Jersey public school teachers do not usually have teachers' liability insurance. The reason is that this is not necessary for a teacher teaching for a local board of education in a public school in New Jersey. A provision of the New Jersey education law N.J.S.A. 18A:16-6 requires local boards of education to hold teachers and employees harmless in civil suits.(A similar provision N.J.S.A. 18A:60-4 for teachers and employees of the State board of education was repealed in 1994.)
